Touch Rugby or TOUCH, as it is known, is a minimal-contact sport that is played worldwide by adults and children of all ages. Whether you are a complete beginner, are looking to play a form of rugby in the off season or haven’t played Touch for some time, individuals or teams of all abilities are welcome to register and play with us.

While there are opportunities to play Touch competitively, our In 2 Touch leagues and events are played at varied social levels with friends, colleagues and family all getting involved. It’s a great way to meet new people in the surrounding area.

What it Touch rugby

Touch Rugby or TOUCH, as it is known, is a minimal-contact sport that is played worldwide by men, women, and children of all identities. The game emphasises is on running and ball-handling skills such as passing and catching. There are many opportunities to play in mixed, women’s and men’s leagues.

How many people are in a team?

The recommended squad size is around 12. Although, a squad can be as big or as small as you like. 6 players are playing on the pitch from each team at any one time. There is to be a minimum of 2 female players in mixed leagues on the pitch. However, we encourage teams to play with an even 3-3 split of women to men.

What equipment do I bring, and what clothing/footwear should I wear?

All equipment is provided for a game to take place. You can wear sports appropriate clothing and rugby boots, specialised touch shoes (with plastic cleats) or trainers. Please note NO screw-ins or metal studs are allowed. Players are also not allowed to play in bare feet.

Playing in the In2Touch leagues allows established teams and new players/complete beginners a chance to get into the game, to play at a grade that suits their ability, and develop their skills and experience. All while enjoying the important social aspects Touch offers on and off the pitch. The game’s objective is to score more tries than the opposition, where all tries are worth one point, regardless of who scores. A try is scored when the ball is placed on or over the try line in a controlled manner. There is NO tackling, NO kicking and NO scrums or lineouts. Only the minimal amount of contact between a defender and an attacker to affect a Touch.

How long is a Touch rugby match, and what is the size of the pitch?

A standard match is 40 minutes long, consisting of two 20-minute halves. At a few venues, games may be shorter than standard. In this case, the match length will be noted in the league details section of our website. Matches at tournaments are generally shorter due to teams playing a series of games over the day.

How do I register a team or as an individual?

Follow the instructions once clicked on the REGISTRATION button, choosing the venue, division (mixed, women’s or men’s) and day that you’d like to play on. You can also register as an individual for any night and any venue you wish. If we put an individual team together for that particular venue, we would contact you to check your availability.

Do I need any experience playing Touch?

No. Touch is an easy game to learn, with women and men of all ages taking up the game that they have never played before. New players and teams can learn the game in our beginner standard leagues. However, experienced players do also play the game, and if you are one of these players, our A-Grade leagues will be a good test of your skills and fitness.

We will advertise the amount of game time over the course of the day in the lead up to each tournament. The pitch can be between 50 and 70 metres long and between 42 and 50 metres wide. A typical standard pitch runs across half a full-sized rugby or football pitch, making two pitches on a full-sized pitch.

If we were to find you a team to play in, the costs would be £60 per player, per season for the London leagues. We may not be putting an individual team together at the venue you wanted, so you may want to also register as a ‘ringer’ – this would notify any team looking for an additional player on any night of your availability. There are no hidden costs to teams of individuals. The fee shown is the total amount you pay for each league you play in.

Players of varying levels of fitness can play Touch. Although games are 40-minutes long rolling substitutes are permitted, allowing you to come off the pitch for a breather as many times as you want! Regardless of your starting fitness level, playing Touch is a great way to improve your fitness and stay healthy. If you are unsure about committing to a league, you can always register for one of our FREE Taster Sessions. Otherwise, feel free to come down to any of our venues and check out how the game is played. You can ask for the venue manager, and they will be able to show you around.
